The  Senate has announced an emergency plenary session scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, to deliberate on matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns requiring immediate legislative attention.

The notice, dated June 15, was issued by Emmanuel Odo, the Clerk of the Senate, on the directive of the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio.

According to the notice addressed to all senators, the emergency sitting will commence at 1100 am, at the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

The Senate said the extraordinary session became necessary to enable lawmakers consider pressing national matters that demand swift legislative action.

While specific issues were not disclosed, the notice highlighted national security as a key area of concern.

“The purpose of this emergency sitting is to enable the Senate consider matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention,” the notice stated.

The Senate also expressed regret for any inconvenience the emergency session may cause lawmakers and urged all senators to make the necessary arrangements to attend.

Although no reason was given for the emergency sitting, there are indications that it is one of the government’s responses to prevailing security and governance challenges facing the country.

It would be recalled that the Senate last Thursday adjourned plenary till July 2.
