Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo says he is feeling optimistic ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as the Seleção prepare to begin their campaign in the United States.
The 41-year-old forward expressed confidence in Portugal’s chances as the squad departed Lisbon for its World Cup base camp in Florida.
“We’re approaching this competition with a lot of hope,” Ronaldo said.

“The preparation has been very good and tiring because we have worked hard. I am physically good and very positive. I believe things will go well and that we will put in a good performance.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also praised the quality of the current Portuguese squad, describing it as one capable of bringing joy to fans back home.
“It’s a very good generation, one that will bring a lot of joy to the Portuguese people,” he said.
Focus on strong start
Ronaldo stressed the importance of beginning the tournament strongly as Portugal target top spot in Group K.
“The most important thing is to start well with the first match, then follow up with the second and third, finish top of the group and from there take it one match at a time,” he added.
Portugal will open their World Cup campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo on June 17 in Houston before taking on Uzbekistan and Colombia in their remaining group matches.
Portugal head into the competition after back-to-back 2-1 friendly victories over Chile and Nigeria, although Ronaldo was unable to find the net in either match.
With a blend of experienced leaders and emerging talents, Portugal will be aiming to improve on their quarter-final finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and challenge for the biggest prize in international football.
The Portuguese national team achieved its best World Cup finish in 1966, when it secured third place.
