Nigeria has launched a nationwide grassroots flag football development initiative in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and Browns Nigeria.

Led by the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA), the programme will be officially unveiled on Wednesday in Lagos, marking the beginning of nationwide equipment distribution and youth development activities.

Tagged “One Ball. One Flag. One Future,” the initiative will distribute 2,000 footballs and 5,000 flag kits to schools, educational institutions and community organisations across the country.

According to NAFA, the programme is designed to expand access to flag football while creating a structured pathway for youth development through sport. It represents a major step toward building a sustainable American football ecosystem in Nigeria, where the sport is still developing compared to football and basketball.

NAFA Emphasises Access and Youth Opportunity

“This initiative is about more than equipment distribution,” said NAFA founder and chief executive Babajide Akeredolu. “It is about access, opportunity and ensuring that children across Nigeria can discover a sport that teaches leadership, teamwork, discipline, confidence and resilience.”

Flag Football Gains Global Momentum

Flag football, a non-contact version of American football, continues to grow globally and is set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, increasing international investment in youth development programmes.

Long-Term Development Pipeline for Schools and Universities

NAFA said the initiative will form the foundation of a long-term development pipeline spanning primary, secondary and tertiary education levels.

Key programmes include the K-12 Flag Football Development Programme, the Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football League (NSSFFL) and the Nigeria Collegiate Flag Football League (NCFFL).

The initiative also features the Gridiron Gems Girls Development Initiative, aimed at boosting female participation, alongside athlete development programmes focused on identifying and nurturing talent.

Nationwide Impact and Stakeholder Engagement

NAFA said the goal is to create a sustainable ecosystem for athletes, coaches and officials while integrating flag football into schools and communities nationwide.

The Lagos launch will bring together government officials, sports administrators, education stakeholders, youth leaders and development partners.

The initiative is expected to increase youth participation in sport while creating new opportunities for leadership development, education and community engagement across Nigeria.
