Liverpool have officially confirmed the appointment of Andoni Iraola as their new head coach on a two-year contract following the departure of Arne Slot.

The Reds parted ways with Slot on Saturday, just one year after the Dutchman guided the club to the Premier League title, and have moved swiftly to install Iraola as his successor.

The 43-year-old Spaniard arrives at Anfield after overseeing the most successful top-flight campaign in Bournemouth’s history.

Under his leadership, the Cherries finished sixth in the Premier League, securing a place in next season’s Europa League after ending the campaign just three points and one position behind Liverpool.

Iraola announced in April that he would leave Bournemouth at the end of the season and had attracted interest from several clubs, including Crystal Palace and AC Milan, before opting for the Liverpool challenge.

Speaking after his appointment, Iraola expressed his excitement about taking charge of one of football’s biggest clubs.

“Really excited, really excited,” Iraola said.

“Because obviously you know about Liverpool. You know that it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world.

“You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted to Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool.”

The former Bournemouth manager said the opportunity to work with elite players was a major factor behind his decision.

“I think Liverpool gives me the chance to coach top players, and top players give you the chance to fight for titles and win titles,” he added.

“Obviously, when you arrive at a place, you cannot promise everything. But I understand where I’m coming to and what is expected.

“I’m ready for the challenge.”
