Liverpool have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Spanish coach Andoni Iraola to become the club’s new head coach following the dismissal of Arne Slot.
Iraola, who departed Bournemouth at the end of the season, has emerged as Liverpool’s preferred choice to lead the next chapter at Anfield after impressing with his progressive and high-intensity style of football in the Premier League.
According to reports from The Athletic, the 43-year-old is set to sign a two-year contract, with a formal announcement expected later this week.
The Spaniard has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most promising coaches, favouring short-term contracts throughout his managerial career. His previous coaching stints include spells with Cypriot club AEK Larnaca, Spanish sides Mirandés and Rayo Vallecano, before his successful tenure at Bournemouth.
The Reds are understood to be keen on making an appointment as early as possible to begin preparations for the new season.
Iraola appointment is also expected to strengthen his backroom staff at Anfield, with Bournemouth assistants Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper among those he hopes to bring with him. However, BBC Sport reports that Bournemouth have yet to receive any formal communication from either coach regarding their futures.
The appointment signals Liverpool’s desire to continue building around an energetic, attacking philosophy, with Iraola widely regarded as one of the most innovative tactical minds of his generation.
Should the deal be finalised as expected, the former Athletic Bilbao defender will become Liverpool’s latest managerial appointment as the club looks to return to domestic and European success under a new leadership structure.
