BudgIT is positioning civic engagement and social accountability at the centre of public discourse as it prepares to host the third edition of the Active Citizens Awards, an initiative aimed at recognising Nigerians driving change through advocacy, innovation, and community action.
The civic technology nonprofit organisation said this year’s awards, themed Celebrating Voices, Inspiring Actions, will hold on July 24, 2026 at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, bringing together activists, nonprofit groups, creatives, youth led organisations, and civic leaders shaping democratic participation across the country.

The initiative reflects growing efforts by civic groups to elevate citizen driven solutions at a time when public trust in governance, accountability, and service delivery remains under pressure.
Speaking on the awards at a press conference on Thursday, Vahyala Kwaga said the platform was created to spotlight individuals and organisations working to strengthen communities despite difficult operating conditions.
“The Active Citizens Awards is about recognising the everyday people and organisations who continue to show courage, leadership, and commitment to building stronger communities and a more accountable society,” Kwaga said.

“Across Nigeria, we are witnessing young people, civic actors, creatives, and innovators shaping the future of democracy and citizen participation, often against difficult odds. This award is an opportunity to celebrate their impact and amplify their work.”
BudgIT said the 2026 edition will feature 12 categories, seven of which are open to public nominations, while the remaining categories will be determined through an internal review process led by the awards committee.
The organisation added that nominees would be assessed on impact, innovation, sustainability, inclusion, leadership quality, and measurable contributions within their communities and sectors.
Joseph Amenaghawon, chairperson of the award selection committee said the selection process would prioritise credibility and community relevance as the organisation seeks to highlight stories capable of driving wider civic participation.
“We are committed to a transparent and rigorous selection process that highlights individuals and organisations creating meaningful change in their communities,” Amenaghawon said.

Also speaking, Temidayo Musa, the chairperson of the awards planning committee, said there are 12 categories for the 2026 edition, adding that seven categories are open for public nomination.
Musa said the remaining five categories will be selected by the awards committee after extensive research and thoughtful deliberation against specific criteria.
The nomination portal opened on May 14, 2026 and will close on June 14, according to the organisers, while shortlisted nominees are expected to be announced ahead of the July ceremony.
