The Centre for Advocacy, Transparency and Accountability Initiative (CATAI), a non-governmental organisation, has secured a $1.5 million grant to provide life-saving interventions for vulnerable people affected by the conflict in Borno State.
The project aims to strengthen resilience and provide livelihoods for those in need across several local government areas.
Sadiq Mu’azu Abubakar spoke during a project inception workshop in Maiduguri at the weekend. The workshop, themed “Integrated Life-saving Nutrition and Protection Assistance for Conflict-Affected Populations in Kaga, Konduga and Ngala LGAs”, introduced the initiative designed to support communities facing severe humanitarian needs.
Addressing critical protection and nutrition gaps
Abubakar emphasised that the project targets critical gaps, including acute malnutrition, general protection, child protection, and gender-based violence across the three council areas. The $1.5 million grant, funded by the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF), will support coordination and timely response efforts.
”We held a project inspection today to discuss strategies with stakeholders across the three local government areas,” Abubakar said. He noted that the initiative is part of a broader humanitarian response in Nigeria, focused on reducing the severity of malnutrition and addressing protection concerns over the next six months.
Collaboration for sustainable humanitarian impact
Babi Baba Mala, Borno State Agency for Coordination of Sustainable Humanitarian Response Director of Data and Statistics, commended CATAI for securing the funding. Mala noted that the life-saving impact of the project would help mitigate the challenges facing vulnerable populations in the affected areas.
”This project is essential as it bridges gaps and complements state government efforts to help our communities thrive after years of conflict,” Mala said. The project is funded by the NHF and will be implemented jointly by CATAI, the Unique Care and Support Foundation (CASFORD), and the Centre for Social Cohesion, Peace and Empowerment (CENSCOPE).
