The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of sunny, cloudy, and thunderstorm conditions across the country on Monday, with increased storm activity expected later in the day.

According to the agency’s weather outlook for Monday, northern states will experience sunny conditions in the morning, with chances of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa and Taraba. As the day progresses, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected to develop over Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba States.

“Thunderstorm activity is expected to increase in coverage and intensity later in the day — anticipate wet conditions, lightning, and possible disruptions,”

In the central region, NiMet predicted a cloudy morning with intervals of sunshine across states such as Kogi and Benue. However, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected later in the day over Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The southern region is expected to witness more widespread weather activity, beginning with cloudy skies and isolated thunderstorms in the morning across states including Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, and Cross River.

The agency noted that thunderstorm intensity and coverage will increase in the afternoon and evening, affecting a broader range of states across the region.

NiMet advised residents to prepare for possible strong winds preceding thunderstorms, which could lead to damage to unsecured objects. Motorists were also urged to exercise caution due to reduced visibility and slippery road conditions during rainfall.

The agency further warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas and advised the public to avoid flood-prone zones during heavy rains. It also cautioned about the risk of lightning strikes and urged individuals to seek shelter during storm events.

For aviation operations, NiMet recommended that airlines obtain location-specific weather reports to ensure safe flight planning and operations.

“Strong winds may precede thunderstorms — secure loose objects.

Drive cautiously during rainfall due to reduced visibility and slippery roads.

Avoid flood-prone areas during periods of heavy rainfall.

Lightning strikes are possible — seek shelter during storms.

Airlines should obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safe operations,” the agency warned.
