Speaking in a video released by the Iranian news agency Fars, the Iran Football Federation president said.

“We will be preparing for the 2026 World Cup. We will boycott the United States but not the World Cup,” citing escalating diplomatic tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Iran are currently scheduled to play all three group-stage matches in the U.S., facing New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle.

However, the federation has opened discussions with FIFA over the possibility of relocating those fixtures, although the global body insists the tournament schedule remains unchanged.

Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, confirmed her country is willing to host Iran’s matches if required.

“Yes. Mexico maintains diplomatic relations with every country in the world; therefore, we will wait to see what FIFA decides,” she said.

The proposal follows remarks from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned that the safety of Iranian players could be at risk if they travel to the United States.

While Gianni Infantino had initially suggested assurances had been given, Trump’s later comments have intensified uncertainty around Iran’s participation logistics.

Despite the uncertainty, Iran, widely known as Team Melli, have continued preparations for the expanded 48-team tournament, holding training camps and friendly matches abroad, including in Turkey.
