Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has challenged Ademola Lookman to improve his overall contribution, despite the Nigerian forward equalling a club record in Los Rojiblancos’ 4–2 victory over Espanyol.

Lookman has made an immediate impact since joining Atletico from Atalanta on February 2, scoring across all competitions within three weeks of his arrival.

The 28-year-old has found the net in the Copa del Rey, UEFA Champions League, and La Liga, underlining his instant adaptation in front of goal.

He has also registered one assist in five appearances for Simeone’s side.

Atletico secured Lookman’s services for €35 million, with the Nigerian international signing a contract that runs until the summer of 2030.

Speaking after the La Liga win, Simeone acknowledged Lookman’s clinical edge but insisted there is more required in terms of tactical discipline and all-around play.

“Lookman brings us goals, more goals than overall play,” Simeone said.

“He can still improve his overall play and defensive work. We need him to adapt to the team’s way of playing in those aspects.

“He has that goal-scoring instinct; the goals he has scored are no coincidence. But we also need more from him in the overall game.”

While Lookman’s finishing has provided an early boost to Atletico’s attacking output, Simeone’s comments underline the Argentine’s emphasis on collective structure, pressing intensity and defensive responsibility, hallmarks of his system at the Metropolitano.

For Lookman, the message is clear: goals alone are not enough in Simeone’s Atletico.
