Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman etched his name into the record books on Wednesday night, delivering a historic performance as Atlético Madrid played out an entertaining 3-3 draw against Club Brugge KV in their Champions League knockout phase play-off first leg.
The 28-year-old, who has been in impressive form since joining Diego Simeone’s side from Atalanta BC in January, scored Atlético’s second goal of the night in a pulsating six-goal encounter.
According to OptaJose, Lookman is the first player to score on his Champions League debut for Atlético since Héctor Herrera against Juventus F.C. in September 2019.
He is also the first player to achieve the feat as a starter since Ángel Correa against SL Benfica in September 2015.
Double-Club Scoring Milestone
Lookman’s goal in Belgium placed him in an elite category in Europe’s premier competition. By scoring for Atlético, he became only the fifth player in history to net for two different clubs in a single Champions League season.
Earlier in the campaign, he had already scored for Atalanta against Eintracht Frankfurt. He now joins a distinguished list that includes Erling Haaland, Dani Olmo, Luis Díaz and Santiago Giménez.
Since his January arrival in Spain, Lookman has made an immediate impact, scoring three goals so far and further strengthening his growing reputation on the European stage.
