The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned comments by Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which suggested that the territory would resist candidates who do not support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The party described Wike’s alleged declaration of “war” against anti-Tinubu candidates as reckless and capable of inflaming political tensions ahead of the polls slated for this Saturday.

In a statement on Monday by Bolaji Abdullahi, its national publicity secretary, the ADC warned that such rhetoric could undermine democratic stability, stressing that only the Nigerian electorate, not any minister or president, has the authority to determine electoral outcomes.

Wike had earlier declared that he would work to ensure that candidates aligned with President Tinubu emerge victorious in Saturday’s area council election.

The Minister spoke in Abuja at the weekend during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, who represented Cross River Central in the National Assembly.

But the ADC has accused Wike and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to intimidate voters, arguing that such posturing reflects growing anxiety about public support.

According to the statement, the minister’s remarks were “irresponsible and dangerous,” particularly at a time when the country faces economic hardship, insecurity and widespread political distrust.

“Nigeria is not a battlefield for political vendettas but a constitutional democracy where sovereignty rests with the people,” the party said.

The ADC urged political leaders to avoid statements that could heighten tensions, maintaining that if officials in the Tinubu -led government were confident about their performance, they should allow voters to deliver their verdict at the poll.

It vowed to resist any attempt to subvert the democratic process, saying it would work with institutions, civil society groups and citizens to defend the integrity of the ballot.

“Our democracy was hard-earned and will not be surrendered to intimidation or abuse of office,” the ADC added.
