President Bola Tinubu has approved the re-appointment of Olugbenga Adekile Owoeye as the substantive Medical Director of the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital Yaba for a second and final four year term, effective June 1, 2025.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the hospital’s Director of Administration, Dr Adeyinka Antwi, who described the renewal as “a clear vote of confidence in Dr Owoeye’s leadership and steady record of service.”

Owoeye, currently the most senior consultant in the hospital, brings more than 20 years of professional experience to the role. He graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife in 1994 and became a psychiatrist in 2003. He later earned a Masters and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Lagos in 2005 and 2009, strengthening his profile as one of the country’s most broadly trained mental health experts.
A respected figure in the sector, Owoeye belongs to several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association, the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, the Medical and Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria, the Nigerian Psychological Association and the Nigerian Institute of Management. He is also an International Certified Addiction Professional.

He has won several grants, published more than thirty academic papers and written a book. His career includes extensive training and presentations at conferences in Nigeria and abroad.
Beyond his credentials, colleagues say what distinguishes him is his commitment to strengthening mental health care in Nigeria. Over the years, he has served on and chaired various committees focused on improving training, clinical management and hospital administration.
Married with children, Owoeye enters his final term with expectations that he will continue the reforms and development projects he began in his first tenure.

His re-appointment signals continuity at one of Nigeria’s most important mental health institutions and sets the stage for further improvements in patient care, staff development and clinical research.
