Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Thursday said the state government would resuscitate its Livestock Breeding and Improvement Centres in Kebbe and Dogon Daji.
The governor disclosed this at a seminar organized by the Veterinary Council of Nigeria in Sokoto.
Tambuwal, represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, said the resuscitation of the centres would help in producing healthy livestock and boost training of livestock professionals.
“The state government has built an ultra-modern abattoir in Sokoto, veterinary clinics and hospitals, among others, to ensure consumption of healthy meat.
“The participants should proffer solutions to the increasing menace of rustling and ways to reduce perennial farmer-herdsmen skirmishes.
“Nigerians should support the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari to restore the lost glory of the nation’s agricultural sector to reduce dependence on oil revenues,” Tambuwal stressed.
The Permanent Secretary, ministry for Animal Health and Fisheries, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad, urged the Federal Government to sustain its efforts to ensure food security in Nigeria.
The Vice Chancellor, Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, who spoke through his deputy in charge of Administration, Prof. Mansur Sa’id, also urged the participants to come up with formidable ways of tackling rustling.
The President, Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Prof. Garba Sharubutu, represented by Dr Allswell Ewejeru, Chief Veterinary Officer in Rivers, said the seminar would improve knowledge of the practitioners.
