…as ANSIEC fixes August 29 for LG poll
With exactly 63 days to the Anambra State Governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a total of 2,802,790 citizens are on the final register of voters who will decide the State’s political future on November 8, 2025.
The figure was released on Thursday following a meeting of the Commission in Abuja.
According to INEC, the number reflects the outcome of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise conducted across all 326 wards of the State from July 8 to July 20, 2025.
“During the exercise, 168,187 citizens registered as new voters. However, after a thorough clean-up using the Automated Biometric Identification System, 27,817 records were found to be double or multiple registrations and were removed,” said Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee.
This left a net addition of 140,370 fresh voters, alongside 5,983 approved applications for transfers into the State, bringing the total number of new entries to 146,353. Before the CVR, Anambra had 2,656,437 registered voters, which now rises to 2,802,790.
The distribution of the register highlights the weight of voter numbers in certain local governments. Idemili North leads with 246,318 voters (8.79 percent), followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73 percent) and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71 percent). At the lower end of the register, Dunukofia accounts for 83,580 voters (2.98 percent), while Anambra West has 71,332 (2.55 percent).
INEC assured that all Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for new registrants, transfers, and replacements would be ready for collection well before the Governorship poll. “We want to reassure voters in Anambra State that their PVCs will be available in good time. No eligible citizen will be disenfranchised,” Olumekun stated.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), has announced August 29, 2026 for the Local Government election across the State’s 21 Councils of the State
In a statement signed by Genevieve Osakwe, Chairman of ANSIEC, the Commission disclosed that nomination forms were already available at its Headquarters located at No. 14/16 Km 8, Awka–Onitsha Expressway, Awka.
He noted that the detailed timetable and election schedule would be made public on Friday (today) giving political parties and candidates ample time to prepare for the polls.
