Who is Nahid Islam, leader of Bangladesh uprising

Nahid Islam a university student in Bangladesh spearheaded a protest against the supreme court judgment reinstating a job quota system of 30 percent for descendants of freedom fighters which the students felt had limited their opportunity on the merit system.

This movement which initially began as a response to the re-established quota system for government jobs, quickly spread throughout the entire country because of the government’s violent response, as well as growing public dissatisfaction against an oppressive government then finally led to the resignation of the country Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after a 15 year rule.

Who is Nahib Islam
Islam, 26, is married, his father is a teacher and has a younger brother named Nakib.

He is a sociology student in the University of Dhaka.

He was the coordinator of a student movement and rose to national fame in mid-July after police detained him and some other Dhaka University students as the protests turned deadly.

He has pledged to create a new democratic Bangladesh, ensuring the safety of its citizens, social justice, and a fresh political landscape.

On Monday, flanked by other student leaders, the Islam told reporters: “We won’t betray the blood shed by the martyrs for our cause.
“We will create a new democratic Bangladesh through our promise of security of life, social justice and a new political landscape.”
