The United States (US) and the Vatican on Thursday renewed their shared commitment to foster sound bilateral relations between the Holy See and the United States of America.

This was disclosed by the Holy See Press Office following Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State’s meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace on Thursday.

According to a communique from the Holy See Press Office, their cordial talks also included an exchange of views “regarding situations on the regional and international levels, with particular attention given to countries experiencing war, political tensions and difficult humanitarian situations as well as the need to work tirelessly for peace.”

Separately, the Holy See Press Office said discussions about countries enduring war included some African and Middle Eastern countries, such as Lebanon and Iran.

According to the Holy See, they also spoke about Cuba, which has seen heightened tensions with the US recently.

The U.S. Secretary of State had already met the Pope, who is originally from Chicago, on May 18, 2025, following the Mass for the beginning of his Petrine ministry. U.S.

Vice President JD Vance also greeted the Pope during the same event.

On the day following that Mass, on May 19, 2025, a bilateral meeting took place between Pope Leo XIV and both Vance and Rubio.
