Lagos to build world-class forensic laboratory in Badagry

businessday-icon

What may become Nigeria’s first world class forensic laboratory is being proposed for establishment in Badagry, Lagos’ ancient town.

The project is being proposed as a public private partnership (PPP) whereby the Lagos State government, the proponent, will provide the land, while the private partners will bring in the expertise and funding options for the various aspects of the landmark project.

The state is also considering inputs from the Federal Government and relevant security agencies especially the police for the success of the project which when established and operational, will go a long way in checking capital flights from the country.

There is currently no such facility in Nigeria, hence governments at various levels, private organisations and individuals, spend millions of naira annually to carry out forensic investigations/studies on crime and health related matters abroad.

Although, Adebiyi Mabadeje, the state commissioner for science and technology, did not mention what the proposed forensic laboratory will cost, BusinessDay, however, gathered that investment in the project may be in excess of $100 million. Already, the state government has opened bid for the expression of interest by private investors with requisite expertise and funding.
