After deliberations with Nigerian government officials and stake holders on gas supply, Ghana is to receive a constant supply of 50 MMBTU/d to power its thermal plant.

The current 30 MMBTU/d or less which is said to be one of the reasons for the current on-going power rationing in Ghana is expected to be increased to 50MMBTU/d.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, the gas suppliers from Nigeria who met a Ghanaian delegation on the shortage of gas supply to the country have assured Ghana of a constant supply of gas.

Though the assured 50MMBTU/d is far below the contractual 123 MMBTU/d, it is believed that the volume would be able to power the Sunon Asogli Plant and keep it running.

The news would come as a relief to most Ghanaians as this suggests that there would be an increase in power generation in the country.

This expected increase, would help ease the inadequate power generation which has plunged the country into energy crisis.

The Ghanaian delegation who visited Nigeria in a bid to increase gas supply to boost power generation for Ghana were told that an increase in competition for the product on the Nigerian market and a continuous breach of the gas pipe lines accounted for the decrease in gas supply.

The Ghanaian delegation have also consulted with officials of the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company and the West Africa Gas Pipeline Authority and explored other potential private gas suppliers in a bid to increase power generation for the country. Managers of the energy sector have partly attributed the on-going load shedding in Ghana to the very low levels of gas supply from Nigeria.

The government in a frantic effort to stabilize the situation is looking at other sources of energy to boost up power generation in the country.

In view of this, government is seeking support from other countries to develop Ghana’s renewable resources; an area that has remained untapped for a long time now in Ghana.
