Billionaire Index: Top female billionaires in Nigeria’s capital market

The Nigerian capital market is cyclical with boom and burst periods. Sadly, the market burst in 2008 left several investors’ hands burnt while many vowed not to be part of the equities market again. However, despite the challenges in the market, there are some quiet breeds of investors who are women and whose worth of investment in the capital market is in the billion club.

Ifeoma Esiri

Mrs. Ifeoma Lilian Esiri, a legal practitioner with over 25 years of experience. Esiri has been a Non-Executive Director at Stanbic IBTC Holdings PLC since August 30, 2005. She also serves as a Director at Stanbic IBTC Asset Management Ltd. and Stanbic IBTC Bank PLC. She serves as a Director of Podini International Limited, Veritas Geophysical Nigeria Limited, Ashburt Leisures Limited, Ashburt Beverages Limited and Ashburt Oil & Gas Limited.

As at 31st December 2018, she had 36.3million units of shares in Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc. The value of her shares stood at N1.67 billion as at the end of Q1 2019. She also has an indirect shareholding amounting to 2.67million ordinary shares through Ashbert Limited valued at N122million as at the last trading day in the first quarter.

Bellinda Ajoke Disu

Bellinda Ajoke Disu is the daughter of Nigerian billionaire businessman, and the second-richest man in Nigeria, Mike Adenuga.

Bella as she is fondly called, graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Boston with a BA in arts. She is currently studying at the North Eastern University for an MS in Leadership.

She is a director at Globacom Ltd. Julius Berger Nigeria Plc., Cobblestone Properties Ltd., and Abumet Nigeria Ltd.

As at 20th March 2019, she had 288.6million indirect shares through Goldstone estate limited, and Bilton Securities Ltd. This gives a total valuation of N7.94billion as at Q1 2019.

Abolanle Matel-Okoh

Abolanle Matel-Okoh, also known as Bola, serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Havilah Ventures Ltd., with experience in diverse areas of judicial science encompassing legal research, investigation, adjudication amongst others.

Matel-Okoh started her career in United Commercial Bank as a Legal Officer in 1992. Over the next 20 years, she gained relevant experience in legal practice and real estate business in various firms based in Nigeria and the USA. She has been a Non-Executive Director at Wema Bank Plc since February 2015.

An attorney with over 20 years of experience in Nigeria and the United States of America, a Member of the Nigerian Bar and the New York State Appellate Division, Third Department Bar. A law graduate of the Ogun State University; she holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the Nigerian Law School, Lagos and is also a Licensed Real Estate Agent from the Weichert Real Estate School, New Jersey, USA.

As of December 2018, she had 1.75 billion units of shares in Wema Bank Plc, valued at N1.35billion by the last trading day in first quarter 2019.

Rose Ada Okwechime,

Rose Ada Okwechime is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abbey Building Society plc since 1992.

Okwechime served in the Banking industry for over 24 years including time at the Bank of England, Director at Abbey Building Society plc. She served as Vice Chairperson of United Bank for Africa plc since 2013.

She had been a Non-Executive Director of United Bank for Africa Plc from July 2012 until September 2018. She served as a Director of United Bank for Africa Plc from August 1, 2005, to May 2010.

She served as a Non-Executive Director of Standard Trust Bank Plc. Mrs. Okwechime

Okwechime has 204,356,780 indirect holdings in Abbey Mortgage Bank Plc through Madonna Ashib Commercial Enterprises Ltd, a company in which she is the majority equity holder. This gives a valuation of N183 million by the close of trading in the first quarter of 2019. However, prior to her stepping down as a non-executive director at UBA plc, she had an indirect holding in UBA Plc amounting to 20.1 million shares through Infant Jesus Academy.

Yinka Aletor

Yinka Aletor is a lawyer by profession and currently a staff of the Nigerian Law School. Prior to this, she had worked at the Continuing Legal Education Association of Nigeria (CLEAN), Akeredolu Olujimi (Legal Practitioners) and Afe Babalola and Co (Emmanuel Chambers) as a lawyer.

Aletor has 383,492,958 indirect shares in Nem Insurance Plc, by the last trading in the first quarter this gives a total valuation of N851 million

Joy Teluwo

Mrs. Joy Teluwo is a registered nurse by profession from the Edo State school of Nursing.

She is the Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Jotel Trade Park Limited. In 2002, she joined Vigilant Oil & Gas as the General Manager where she set up risk management for the Company. She continues to successfully run three indigenous companies including Tropical Farms.

Joy Teluwo has a 6.38% stake in NEM Insurance amounting to 337,054,067 shares. As at the last trading day in the first quarter in the first quarter 2019, this gives a valuation of N748million
