The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday cautioned motorists against reckless driving on the highway during the Yuletide.
Umoru Abdullahi, the Unit Commander, Ore, Ondo State, gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
Abdullahi, who spoke after flagging off the Ember Month Programme tagged “Crash the Crash, Speed Kills’’ in Ore, warned motorists against speeding, which was often seen along the Shagamu-Ore-Benin expressway.
According to him, motorists driving against traffic have also caused crashes and loss of lives and property on the highway.
“Road accidents are caused by human errors; motorists should always put on the safety belts and avoid speeding, wrong overtaking, use of expired tyres and overloading of goods and passengers.
“Most of the road crashes are recorded during the ember months not because the months are bad, but because most drivers throw caution to the wind to flout traffic rules.
“We organise this campaign to put road users in check, for them to obey and abide with traffic rules in order to save their lives and that of the passengers,’’ he said.
Abdullahi said his command would deploy its officers on the Shagamu-Ore-Benin highway, to control motorists during the Yuletide and arrest any erring driver.
NAN reports that the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACCOMORAN) and other stakeholders attended the programme.
