Wellspring University, Benin has graduated 224 students at its combined maiden convocation ceremony held in Benin-City, weekend.
A breakdown of the result comprising four sets, 2012-2016, showed that 15 are in the first class, 95 made second class upper division, 95 second class lower while 19 made third class.
In his speech, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Obi Ikediugwu commended the graduands, saying that the faculty had toiled under an environment where the fear of God is enthroned and where the dictum, ‘business before pleasure’ remains a watchword, to raise the four sets of well-refined graduates.
According to him, the graduates are from seven disciplines of study comprising Computer Science, Microbiology, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, International Relations and Mass Communication.
“The possiblebest in each of the respective disciplines has been rigorously and diligently offered to you by highly experienced and committed professors and academics of other ranks to fashion you into graduates that can, and are indeed, competing favourably at home and abroad,” he stated.
Ikediugwu disclosed that plans are afoot to introduce more academic disciplines by next session, including degree programmes in Public Administration as well as postgraduate courses in all the university’s present degree offerings.
He enjoined the graduates to keep in touch with the university, College and Department. “We shall always want to know where and how you are. With over 200 of you, the graduating students, you can establish a vibrant Alumni Association of Wellspring University, Benin City, a powerful vehicle through which graduands of universities, the world over, keep in touch with and feedback to their respective citadels of learning,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chancellor of the university, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, charged the graduates to defend the degree awarded to them in character and application of the knowledge acquired because there is a public barometer for measuring the quality of scholarship they received in the university.
Highpoint of the ceremony was the conferment of honorary degrees of Doctor of Science (Hon. D in Management) on Chief (Dr) Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma, Dr. ABC Orjiakor, Uyi Akpata and Dory Afe Okojie. Engr. Owen Obaseki also received the award of Goodwill Ambassador of Wellspring University.
