United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has promised to continue on its intervention in the provision of portable water within the urban and rural communities for domestic uses in all the ten states in Enugu field office .
Speaking at a Zonal Media breakfast meeting on the commemoration of 2017 world water Day organised with theme “why waste water” by UNICEF Enugu field Office for Abia,Enugu and Ebonyi states, Amose Kudzala, Wash specialist and officer in charge of UNICEF Enugu field office noted that about 1.8 billion people use conterminated water while 663 million live without a safe water supply close to their homes.
This, he said, was part of the reasons why UNICEF is intensifying efforts to improve on Sanitation, Hygiene and water intake.
“Today there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to their homes, thereby spending hours queuing to fetch water or trekking long distances to source for water or coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water”.
He appealed to the Media to play a major role in the Campaign to educate the people on the Sanitation, Hygiene and water intakes.
In a goodwill message, the Managing Director, Enugu state rural water Supply ENRUWASSA Frank Okenwa Omeje stated that ENRUWASSA would intensify effort to ensure that good water is provided particularly in the rural areas.
He thanked the state government for making enough provision in the budget this year to enable them face the water challenges in the state squarely.
He, however, appealed for the releasing of the allocations regularly to enable the agency attend promptly to reports.
“While we appreciate the donor Agencies for their uncommon assistance before now, we appeal that they should step up the needed interventions so as to support the state in achieving one of her 4 points Agenda” the Managing Director said.
