Darius Ishaku

Hundreds of young men armed with guns on Friday invaded Danancha village in Gasol Local Government Area of Taraba State,  killing two persons, and burning over a hundred houses  and property worth millions of naira, eyewitnesses say.

This led to the displacement of many residents of the area, they added.

The gunmen invaded the village at about 3pm and started burning houses, shooting sporadically without any provocation from residents.

Danancha has been under attacks following clashes between the Tivs and Jukuns since the renaming of the village by Taraba State government from Danancha to Kwararafa village.

A joint security team has since been deployed and stationed in the village to keep peace among the people, but this has been unable to prevent the attacks

Ibo Tim, who is a resident of Danacha confirmed the killing of the two people and destruction of property to  BusinessDay on phone. He said the two people killed were found dead with  bullet wounds.

It was also gathered that the gunmen carried out the destruction from 3pm to 6pm without being stopped by the joint security team in the in the village.

Another resident of Danacha, Theophilus Simon, told BusinessDay that normalcy had returned to the village as more military personnel had been deployed to the area.

Phone lines of the caretaker chairman of Gasol local government council, Tanko Maikerfi were switched off when BusinessDay called him.

Although our correspondent witnessed a massive exodus of villagers who were running to take refuge in Jalingo, the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer, Taraba State command, DSP David Misal, said he was yet to be briefed by the DPO of the Danacha.
