The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba, said on Monday that a transparent democratic process had the capacity to strengthen Nigeria’s political system.
He said NLC would always support a democratic process and oppose the imposition of political leaders.
“If the process is democratic we believe in that; we do not believe in imposition.”
“Therefore our position is, if it is a democratic process, we stand by it because that is what will strengthen our democracy; we should not allow imposition.”
“We always stand by a process that is transparent; a process that is democratic. Leadership must emerge through a democratic process.”
“I think that is the hallmark of that position and then I think we should not mince words in saying that.”
“We should all celebrate the fact that the process should be made very democratic and that the two chambers should be allowed to choose the leaders of their choice without any interference or imposition. That remains our position.”
The NLC president expressed congratulations to all members of the two chambers of the National Assembly on the successful election of their new leadership and urged them to be focused, patriotic and committed to deepening democracy and development in Nigeria.
He praised President Mohammadu Buhari for not interfering in the elections of the National Assembly leadership, saying “We hope this will serve as a lesson to all politicians, amongst others, who always allow democracy to run its full course without any dictate or imposition of candidates or views on others.”
“All arms of government must be allowed to function in accordance with the constitution without interference.”
“The National Assembly should at all times be independent,” he said.
Wabba appealed to the lawmakers to reconsider all bills that before them with a view to moving the country to greater heights.
