The conference of Speakers of State Legislature of Nigeria on Tuesday warned the State Governors to desist from activities that are aimed at stifling and suppressing the legislative arm at the state level.
The forum which expressed concern over the recent attack of the Speaker and principal officers of Zamfara State House of Assembly by Department of the State Security Service (DSS), described Governor Abdulaziz’s action as capable of throwing the State and the country into anarchy.
The forum stated this in a statement signed by its administrative secretary, Busari Sarafadeen, condemned the recent arrest of the Speaker and principal officers of the Samara State House of Assembly by the Governor.
To this end, the forum called on well-meaning Nigerians to rise up against any authoritarian and tyrannical tendencies the state governors who considered themselves as above the law.
“We like to point out that the system of government whose legislative arm is stifled, suppressed or at the mercy of the executive is to say the least undemocratic and despotic. In such an environment, the people do not have a say and their feelings, needs and aspiration would not be considered.”
The conference also called on the DSS and other higher authority to discourage such partisan and undemocratic on order to allow democratic principle of separation of powers, check and balances and the rule of law for the ultimate goal of entrenching democratic culture.
