Segilola Resources Operating Limited has commissioned new infrastructure and community business projects in Osun State as the firm ramps up corporate social responsibility initiatives aimed at strengthening ties with host communities around its mining operations.
The projects were inaugurated during a visit by the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, to the company’s operations in Odo-Ijesa, where he was received by Olusola Olusomidomo, the deputy general manager, on behalf of Segun Lawson the chief executive officer.
Oba Haastrup toured the Segilola Gold Mine and inspected several community development projects executed under the company’s Community Development Agreement commitments.
Among the projects commissioned were the rehabilitation of the Imogbara-Odo-Ijesha road corridor, a renovated palace for the Olumolu of Imogbara and a block of classrooms at Imogbara Primary School.
The company said the projects are part of broader efforts to support infrastructure development, improve livelihoods and expand economic opportunities in communities hosting the gold mining operation.
Segilola Resources said the initiatives have created more than 80 direct jobs for community residents, while 27 percent of the mine’s workforce comes from host communities and 25 percent from Osun State.
A major highlight of the visit was the inspection of the community-owned Ogere-Ekun Golden Water Factory in Iperindo, a venture established to provide treated drinking water and generate long-term economic value for local residents.
The facility, once operational, is designed to produce 3,000 litres of treated water per hour using reverse osmosis and ozone treatment systems. It is also equipped with PET bottle-blowing and sachet water production lines, alongside backup power infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted operations.
The company said the water factory was structured as a self-sustaining enterprise with governance overseen by a board of trustees made up of community representatives to ensure local ownership and accountability.
In addition, Segilola completed the rehabilitation of a 2.4-kilometre road linking Imogbara and Odo-Ijesha, incorporating drainage systems and culverts to improve accessibility and reduce flooding.
Speaking during the commissioning, Oba Haastrup commended the company for creating employment opportunities across the South-West, noting that a significant share of beneficiaries came from communities within Ijesaland.
He also stressed the importance of mining firms complying with Community Development Agreements and implementing impactful social investment programmes that directly benefit host communities.
Madhurii Sarkar-Amoda, community development and stakeholder manager at Segilola Resources, said the projects were designed to address critical social and economic needs in the area.
“The water factory will solve this problem for the Iperindo community by providing a trusted drinking water source for residents and it also serves as a source of livelihood and economic prosperity that will outlive the mine,” she said.
The projects underscore increasing efforts by mining companies operating in Nigeria to deepen community engagement as the government pushes to expand the contribution of solid minerals to the economy.
