The 1982 to 1987 Old Girls’ set of the Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School (LAGGS), have decided to give back to their alma mater, by putting up a debate for the present students in the school, so as to instil in the students the virtues of hard work, confidence and diligence which the Old Girls acquired while in the school.

This effort is also said to be part of the ways of identifying with the school, which instilled in them the virtues of discipline, moral rectitude and quality education which have not only guided their respective endeavours up till now, but have formed a major part of their lives.

Speaking at the event, Olanrewaju Eboigbe, president of LAGGS 82-87 set, said the association is proud of the school and wishes to continue to identify with her, adding that their desire and resolve is to contribute in whichever way they can to ensure the school achieves greater heights.

“A forum of this kind is organised to sharpen students’ intellect, help them express themselves confidently, contribute to social issues and find solutions to problems that confront youths today.

Oluyomi Labode, principal of the school from 1982 to 1996 and former director of education, Surulere Zonal Office, Lagos, expressed her joy seeing the students she taught during her time being successful in various spheres of life.

Ladoke disclosed that during her time, parents were very much involved in the education of their children and the flair for money was not there but today parents now go in pursuit of money, thereby leaving the education of their children to suffer.

According to her, “Before I left, I was getting discouraged because people wanted to get into positions without working for it and some teachers do not have respect for the head which is affecting the education sector negatively in Nigeria today.”

She advised that parents should get more involved in the education of their children; students should be obedient, dedicated and hardworking; and teachers should put in their best in teaching the students.

She stressed that teachers who sell to students in school should stop it as this reduces the reputation of the teachers, thereby making the children that buy from them their lords.

Akin Ajayi, the present principal of the school, appreciated the Old Girls and revealed that the school still needs more infrastructures, especially a chapel, which will contribute to the moral upbringing of the student and serve as a centre for social communication.

Students who contested in debate and those who came out best in their various classes were given prizes.
