The Ogoni umbrella body, Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), said it is urging all Ogoni people in and outside Nigeria to maintain close vigilance on Shell, saying the company “has a history of lying about the Ogoni (spill) situation.”
According to MOSOP, it is still not certain Shell would leave Ogoni land for good, going by what it perceives as curious moves by the oil giant, despite recent reports that it (Shell) plans to leave Ogoni.
The Ogoni group said the Anglo Dutch oil company’s track record in Nigeria is replete with many stories about being “socially responsible,” but leaving huge ecological damages yet unattended-to in Ogonni.
Frank Jonah, chairman of MOSOP Kingdom Coordinators Forum, said in Port Harcourt late last week while reacting to news of Shell’s planned exit from Ogoni land that “Shell is a lying company. They have a history of lies. They claim they are socially responsible, but the Ogoni case where they have made billions of dollars and made no attempt to address the (environmental and social) problems of the people shows how crude and irresponsible Shell truly is.”
