The Ogun House of Assembly on Thursday urged the Federal Government to include the construction of pedestrian bridges at the Mowe/Ibafo axis in the ongoing reconstruction of the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.
Mr Tunde Sanusi, representing Obafemi/Owode constituency, made the call while speaking under personal explanation during plenary in Abeokuta.
He commended the Federal Government on its efforts towards ensuring that the expressway was of good quality, when finally completed.
Sanusi said that the federal government should consider the construction of pedestrian bridges in the Mowe/Redeemed Camp axis, Ibafo and Asese, which fall under the Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area.
“In these areas, we have well over an estimated 500,000 population and 50 business organisations which have staff of well over 100,000.
“Well, more than 50,000 people cross the roads on daily basis and in the past, a lot of accidents were recorded which had led to deaths.
“If work is completed on the expressway, it is going to be difficult for people to cross the road and the construction of pedestrian bridges along the expressway would ease movement of people in the area,’’ he said.
Responding, the Speaker, Mr Suraj Adekunbi, said that the areas in question were densely populated, adding that construction of pedestrian bridges there would be necessary.
Adekunbi said that the Mowe/Ibafo axis of the expressway was one of the busiest in the country, urging that the government should consider the construction of the pedestrian bridges in the area.
“I want to charge the state Ministry of Works to liaise with the Federal Ministry of Works and do the needful,’’ he added.
