Managing director of Wapic Insurance plc, Yemi Adekoya, has urged women professionals in Nigeria to develop themselves educationally and learn on the job, as there is no boundary for women in educational development.
Adekoya said this as the company commemorated the International Women’s Day at the company’s head-office in Lagos, over the weekend.
Adekoya, in her address to a group of young women at the Wapic International Women’s Day seminar, said, “Women should realise sometimes you have to fight for your rights before you earn it. As a woman you need to earn recognition, and you have to work hard to have that recognition.”
According to Adekoya, many women today believe they are so busy with their job; however, they cannot be too busy to neglect taking care of their homes or family. “But I do not think you have lots to do more than we had. Women should be celebrated on daily basis,” she said.
Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, chairman, Wapic Insurance plc, in his address to the women, said, “At Wapic we do not bench our best players; we make sure our best players are on the field of play. It is the way I have been brought up as a child, as a brother, as a husband and as a father.”
According to Aig-Imoukhuede, the men in Wapic also share in his philosophy with the women that men and women are partners in building the Wapic legacy. “The truth is that together we can achieve greater things than going it alone,” he said.
Mosun Belo-Olusoga, chairman, Board of Access Bank plc, in her remarks on career prospect and challenges, said she started her career as an accountant and as an auditor. However, after working as an auditor for seven years she wanted a career change and had to accept a level and pay cut to move into banking.
According to Belo-Olusoga, the younger generation appears to be over pampered nowadays than it used to be, as “lots of young people do not want to suffer today before getting to the top of their career. People do not want to pay the price of hard work anymore.”
The Wapic International Women’s Day Seminar was held in commemoration of the 2017 International Women’s Day theme, “Be Bold for Change” as a vehicle for change. It is also to assure women that change is possible beyond taking groundbreaking action that truly drives the greatest change for women.
