Nigerian marketers and advertisers can significantly improve audience engagement and brand loyalty by adopting strategies used by top YouTube creators, according to Olumide Balogun, director at Google West Africa.

He noted that YouTube creators have become central to mainstream entertainment, commanding millions of views, shaping cultural trends, and influencing consumer purchasing decisions at scale.

Balogun explained that creators offer valuable insights into how brands can connect more effectively with modern audiences in an increasingly crowded digital environment.

He emphasised that authenticity and relatability are critical to building trust with today’s consumers.

While traditional corporate videos often rely on high production value and polished messaging, he said, audiences are more responsive to content that feels genuine and human.

According to him, brands can benefit from showcasing behind-the-scenes moments, sharing employee stories, and leveraging user-generated content to create deeper emotional connections with consumers.

“Consumers want to see the real faces behind a brand, not just a polished corporate image,” he said.

The Google executive also highlighted the importance of adopting a multi-format content strategy. Successful YouTube creators, he noted, combine short-form videos, long-form content, and live streams to reach audiences at different stages of engagement.

Short videos help capture attention quickly, while longer formats allow for deeper storytelling and product education. Live streams, meanwhile, foster real-time interaction and strengthen audience relationships.

He advised marketers to mirror this approach by integrating diverse content formats into their campaigns to meet evolving consumer preferences.

Balogun further stressed the importance of community building, noting that YouTube’s ecosystem thrives on interaction rather than one-way communication.

Creators actively engage their audiences through comments, feedback, and live sessions, building loyal communities that trust their recommendations.

He stated that this trust presents an opportunity for brands to collaborate with creators in ways that feel organic and credible.

He pointed to tools such as creator partnerships and advertising formats that allow brands to amplify creator-led content while preserving authenticity.

As Nigeria’s digital economy expands, Balogun said brands that adopt a creator-first mindset focused on authenticity, diverse storytelling, and community engagement will be better positioned to convert casual viewers into loyal customers.

“YouTube’s community-driven model offers a blueprint for marketers seeking to remain competitive in the evolving digital space,” he noted.
