National Assembly Adjourns over Senator Longjan’s death

Finance bill: Higher education tax, others raise concerns

The two chambers of the National Assembly on Tuesday adjourned plenary over the death of Senator Ignatius Longjan, who represented Plateau South Senatorial District.

Longjan died at Turkish Hospital, Abuja on Sunday. His death came  a little over a month after Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu, who represented Imo North Senatorial District, died in December 2019.

The motion for adjournment of the Senate was moved by Leader of the Senate, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi.

The Senators also observed a minute silence in honour of the deceased lawmaker.

Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo -Agege, who presided over the plenary, announced the adjournment.

The Senators will on Wednesday dedicate plenary to pay tribute to the late Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu, Ovie Omo -Agege.

In the House of Representatives, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila announced the adjournment immediately after reading a Communication/letter from the Senate on the floor of House.

Gbajabiamila had expressed sadness over the death of Longjan who he said would be missed by members of the National Assembly, especially his immediate colleagues in the Senate.

The Speaker in a condolence message by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, prayed that God will grant the soul of the late senator a peaceful resting place.

“It hurts once again to mourn a colleague in the 9th National Assembly in the person of Senator Ignatius Longjan.

“It is indeed sad to lose another colleague to the cold hands of death. I pray the Almighty God gives his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” the Speaker said.

Longjan who was elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was a former Deputy Governor of Plateau state.
