Delegates attending the 49th Annual conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) had a good laugh when Ibrahim Magu, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) told the audience that there is no interference whatsoever in his duty of fighting corruption.
Magu chaired one of the plenary sessions titled, ‘strengthening institutional framework to support anti-corruption drive’ at the event which is hosting over 5,000 delegates in Abuja.
Urging the accountants to be more committed to government”s anti-corruption drive, Magu had mentioned that he enjoys the full support of the Presidency and does not encounter any interference whatsover- a comment which stirred laughter from the audience, obviously in disagreement.
One of the delegates also raised the issue and questioned Magu”s position on non-interference considering that some high profile politicians who are being investigated/prosecuted by same EFCC are currently serving members of Buhari’s government.
Responding to the question, Magu insisted that the EFCC is undeterred despite sentimentts and that the anti-corruption fight should be everybody’s responsibility
He also noted that the Commission’s highest convincton this year have been two ex-governors who are also affiliatef to the ruling party.
“At the EFCC, we stay with a case an conclude it,” Magu stressed.
When also asked about the posh and very expensive vehilcles parked at the EFCC premises, Magu said they do not belong to the Commission but were those confiscated from “yahoo boys”.
L. O. Lumumba, an Associate Professor of Public Law in Kenya, as well as Sampson Etugo, Dean Faculty of Law at the Abia State University also featured at the plenary.
The ongoing ICAN conference comes with the theme: ‘Building Nigeria for sustainable Growth and Development’.
