The Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics Free Zone (LADOL), a private indigenous free zone in Nigeria, situated inside the Port of Lagos, has expressed regret over shooting incident that occurred on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at its facility.
An official statement signed by Olakunle Kalejaye, public relations officer of LADOL, which confirmed the incident, said the shooting resulted to one fatality and one injury.
“As announced by Mohammed Abdullahi Gana, commandant general of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), a Civil Defence officer opened fire in error at LADOL,” Kalejaye said.
Kalejaye further said the incident was contained within the fabrication and integration shipyard in LADOL, where Samsung staff was currently working on the final stages of the Egina FPSO development project.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the NSCDC officer, who tragically lost his life as well as the Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria staff member (Samsung) who was injured. The Samsung staff member is in stable condition and is now returning to South Korea for further medical attention. We are providing every support we can to those impacted and their families,” he assured.
He however commended the NSCDC team in LADOL, particularly their commander on the scene, who swiftly brought the situation under control. “We note that this is an isolated incident which should not be interpreted to portray NSCDC in a poor light. We also commend and thank the LADOL security team who acted professionally and calmly to ensure the situation was resolved quickly.
Kalejaye assured that LADOL would continue to work closely with the Civil Defense, Nigerian Exports Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) and the Nigerian Police Service (NPF) as they undertake their investigation into this tragic incident.
He said LADOL would provide further updates when appropriate, even as he assured that the safety and wellbeing of those who work at the zone has remained the company’s ultimate priority.
“We thank our tenants and other visitors in the zone who obeyed the Free Zone regulations, stayed safe and who have subsequently sent their condolences and other support,” he said.
