Barau Jubrin, senator, representing Kano North Senatorial Constituency, has described the Light Rail project initiated by Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, as one project that will positively impact on socio-economic activities in the state.
He said himself and a dominant number of other members of the National Assembly representing state are in full support of the measures being taken by the governor to actualize the project.
Jubrin, who is the chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions & TETFUND, made this disclosure, while speaking in an interview with BusinessDay on the side –lines of the inauguration of an Implementation Committee for the actualization of the multi –billion Naira project.
The Senator revealed that he led 18 other members of the National Assembly representing the state to the Government House to witness event as a demonstration of their support for the project.
“You see when something is good there is no way it can hide the governor is doing well, he put together a fine budget and the State House Assembly decided to pass it on a record time, but we can but to witness the signing that is number one.
“Two, you can see the way the Kano Metropolitan Light Rail project implementation committee was inaugurated today, we came to show our support because this is a kind of project that has never been conceived in this part of the country.
“We in the National Assembly said look this two events are a positive indicators that good governance is taking place here, and we came to show our support for the happenings.” He explained.
Commenting on the anticipated impacts that the light rail project will have on the state, he noted that the rail has the potential of fast tracking socio-economic development, particularly, in the movement of goods and service across the state.
“In fact we sure that the rail project is going to create tremendous new jobs, and other economic values, like what we are seeing happening in developed cities, in other countries, and even here in Africa.
“We have seen it happen in cities like, City of London, City of New York, City of Beijing, here in Africa in Cities, such as: Casablanca in Morocco, Cairo in Egypt, we have this kind of light rail there.
“So we are happy that some state governors in Nigeria, including our own governor here in Kano have resolved to bring this kind of transportation development to Nigerians, which is why we are here” Jubrin added.
The Senator charged residents of the state to give maximum support to the governor in order to enable him realize the project on a record period, promising that they will do everything possible to support the actualization of the project.
Also commenting on project, Umar Tofa, chairman of the Implementation Committee, who is also the district head of Tofa Local Government Area of state, described the project as a well conceived idea aimed at achieving the objective of making Kano a Mega city.
Tofa assured the governor and the citizens of the state that the committee will work with integrity, professionalism, and sincerity to see that the project take over, and the people of the state get value for their money.
He noted that the loan option adopted by the governor in developing the project was the best option as no government can develop that kind of project with it internally generated alone.
The chairman of the committee advised people trying to achieve political capital gain with the negative rumours that they are spreading concerning the project to desist as the project is very viable
