Insurgency : NAF unveils Geo Spatial Intelligence Data Center

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Tuesday inaugurated the Geo Spatial Intelligence Data Center to address the security challenges in the country.

The centre would deploy state of the art technology including sophisticated and high value computer software to gather and analyse data to produce intelligence in support of NAF and joint operations around the country, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, who inagurated the facility congratulated the NAF for establishing the center.

“It is heartwarming to note that the product of the centre will not only serve the interest of the Nigerian Air Force, but the other arms of the armed forces and security agencies in Nigeria as well.

“I am told that the centre, for instance, can produce current maps for Nigerian Army operations and can assist the Immigration Service to identify old and new boarder crossing points used by illegal migrants.

“The centre could not have come into being at a more auspicious time; at a time the country is grappling with various internal security challenges.

“The output of the centre will, no doubt, go a long way to assist in our fight against insurgency,” he said.

Olonisakin urged the personnel who would operate, manage and maintain the equipment in the centre, to be dedicated in their duties.

“So much is expected from you and a lot of lives could be saved if you carry out your duties diligently and to the best of your ability. I enjoin you to strive for excellence for which the Centre will be known,” he said.

Earlier, Abubakar said the unveiling of the Center was an epoch-making event, adding that “today we are gathered here to witness the commissioning of the Nigerian Air Force Geospatial Intelligence Data Centre.

“Military operations globally are becoming more intelligence-driven; hence militaries all over the world take advantage of satellites and other space borne systems in gathering actionable intelligence.

“It is against this backdrop that the Nigerian Air Force embarked on this worthwhile endeavour by leapfrogging from traditional means of intelligence gathering to the use of space-borne platforms in the production of actionable intelligence for operational effectiveness,” he said.
