Olatunji Disu, Inspector-General of Police, has approved the promotion of 17,952 junior police officers across various ranks in the Nigeria Police Force in a move aimed at boosting security and personnel welfare, enhancing morale, and rewarding professionalism, diligence, and dedication to duty.
The promotion exercise, one of the largest in recent times, affects officers serving in commands and formations across the country and is part of the Force leadership’s ongoing efforts to strengthen motivation and improve operational effectiveness within the police service.
According to a statement by Anthony Placid, Force Public Relations Officer, the exercise covers officers across three rank categories.
“A total of 165 Sergeants have been elevated to the rank of Inspector, while 73 Corporals were promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In addition, 17,714 constables have advanced to the rank of corporal.
“The promotion, which takes immediate effect, would positively impact the morale of officers and reinforce the Force’s commitment to recognising hard work and dedication among its personnel,” the police said.

The IGP stressed that timely promotion remains a critical element of the force’s human resource management strategy and an important mechanism for motivating officers to remain committed to the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
He noted that the advancement of deserving personnel reflects the determination of the current police leadership to promote merit, encourage career progression, and strengthen institutional development within the force.
Disu further described the promotions as a recognition of the sacrifices and contributions of officers who have demonstrated commitment and professionalism in the course of their duties, despite the numerous security challenges confronting the country.
The police chief congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to regard their elevation not merely as a reward but as a call to greater responsibility and service.

He charged them to exhibit higher standards of professionalism, discipline, and dedication in the discharge of their duties while remaining committed to the core values of the Nigeria Police Force.
The IGP also emphasised the need for officers to continue carrying out their responsibilities with integrity, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law, noting that public confidence in policing depends largely on the conduct of officers at all levels.
The promotion exercise comes amid ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force aimed at improving welfare, enhancing operational efficiency, and building a more professional and accountable institution capable of addressing contemporary security challenges.
The Force reiterated its commitment to promoting excellence, rewarding hard work, and strengthening institutional capacity in line with global best practices in policing, while assuring officers that merit and dedication would continue to be recognised under the current leadership.
