In continuation of its efforts to ensure the provision of electricity 24 hours a day for all Nigerians, the Federal Government on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to support the growth of renewable energy in the country.
The permanent secretary, federal ministry of power, works andhousing, in charge power sector Louis Edozien, stated this in Abuja while delivering his keynote address at the launch of “Power for All: Nigeria Call to Action on Renewable Energy.”
Etore Thomas, deputy director in the ministry, quoted Edozien as saying “that renewable energy sources are very critical to achieving incremental power as there are no threats of vandalism as currently being experienced with the gas pipelines, yet it could give clean energy and lead to the required leap to the electricity supply chain.”
“Power for All” is a global campaign to promote Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) as the fastest, most cost effective and sustainable way to achieving universal energy access.
Edozien described the provision of electricity in smaller ranges as laudable, adding that government on its part had already embraced several similar initiatives as could be seen from its revival of the
Zungeru 700 megawatt hydro power project and the Mambilla 3050 megawatt project, amongst
others in the country.
The permanent secretary used the avenue to call on investors to come into the sector, pointing out that government’s focus has been on creating enabling environment that allows investors to strive.
He said that the government’s objective can only be met by investors who are ready to “venture out of the pen and grow the industry”.
The country director of Power for All, Ify Malo, stated that power for All campaign seeks to advance decentralized renewable energy as key to achieving universal access quickly, cheaply and sustainably.
She further stressed that the campaign is focused on building a sustainable distributed renewable energy for market growth in Nigeria.
According to her, “electricity access is fundamental to socio-economic development in the country, and that the Power for All campaign launch was simultaneously taking place in Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone.”
