The Federal Government has sealed a partnership with Coventry University to establish a Nigerian campus that will offer UK-accredited degrees locally, in a move aimed at reducing the cost of overseas education and strengthening the country’s human capital base.
Maruf Olatunji Alausa, Minister of Education, in a statement, disclosed that the initiative is being advanced under a Transnational Education (TNE) framework, as part of broader efforts to expand access to globally competitive education within Nigeria.
Alausa, who is currently in the United Kingdom alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said engagements are ongoing with university leadership, investors and development partners to fast-track the project.
Under the plan, the proposed campus will be located in Alaro City, Lagos state and will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM), Business, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

According to the minister, degrees awarded at the Nigerian campus will be equivalent to those obtained in the United Kingdom, providing students with internationally recognised qualifications without the financial burden of studying abroad.
“The proposed campus, to be located in Alaro City, Lagos State, will offer Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM), Business, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). All degrees will be equivalent to those awarded in the United Kingdom. Admissions are expected to commence between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals,” the statement read.

The government said the partnership is designed to address skills gaps in critical sectors, improve graduate employability, and retain education spending within the domestic economy.
“We want Nigerian parents to enjoy their children being at home while still receiving a world-class UK education,” Alausa said.
The initiative is being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education with support from the United Kingdom’s Department for Business and Trade, as Nigeria steps up efforts to position itself as a regional hub for knowledge, skills development and innovation.
