Enugu Trade Fair: NAFDAC says 95% of food, drug products complied with regulations

ENUGU TRADE FAIR

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has expressed its satisfaction at how manufacturers of  products complied  with its regulations at the just-concluded 2017 Enugu International Trade Fair.

The NAFDAC Coordinator in Enugu State, Chika Obiano, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, while recounting the agency’s monitoring activities at the 11-day fair.

Obiano said that over 95 per cent of food and drug products exhibited at the fair complied with NAFDAC’s regulations and standards.

He urged local manufacturers to continue to comply with the agency’s regulations to reduce fake products in markets, shops and kiosks located over the country.

“I want to remind Nigerians to look for NAFDAC’s registration numbers, manufacturing and expiry dates on the packs of products they buy.

“NAFDAC’s registration number on a product is a seal of quality that guarantees the wholesomeness of that product; while for drugs, it is a guarantee of its efficacy,’’ Obiano said.

The coordinator called on the public to make use of NAFDAC Mobile Authentication Service (MAS) so that they could identify original from fake malaria antibiotic drugs before buying them.

“You have to scratch the pack of malaria and antibiotics drugs to get a SMS number to which you text to authenticate the drugs before usage. That is what we call the NAFDAC Mobile Authentication Service (MAS),’’ he said.

NAN reports that the just-concluded 2017 Enugu International Trade Fair commenced on March 31 and ended on April 10.

It was organised by the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA).

The fair which is in its 28th year had the theme: “Promoting Nigeria’s Industrial Sector and SMEs for Inclusive and Robust Economy”.

The Enugu International Trade Fair is supported by the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, and is organised to showcase Nigeria’s non-oil products.

The exhibition provides opportunities for local and foreign businesses to explore and access commercially viable markets in the South-East.
