The President of Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Ugochukwu Chime, has decried the inability of agrarian communities to go to their farms due to fear of insecurity.

Chime told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Wednesday that the situation had led to hike in prices of farm products in the country.

He noted that the situation had continued to make life difficult for both urban and rural citizens, especially farmers.

“The current menace of the herdsmen across the country, and particularly in the southern part of the country, needs serious government intervention.

“This is because many communities that are predominantly agrarians can hardly go to their farms again for fear of attack of herdsmen.

“We, therefore, wish to counsel the Federal Government to come out boldly to stop this menace.

“This is to douse the growing tension in the land and to avoid aggravating the anarchy and rocking the peace in different parts of the country,’’  Chime said.

He said peace was needed for effective governance, and government needed it to be able to govern to achieve spelt out goals and campaign promises to Nigerians.

Chime lauded the Federal Government for its fight against insurgency in the North-East as well as daily provision for Internally Displaced Persons and their resettlement.

“It is good that Boko Haram has been cleared out of Sambisa forest, which has been their base.

“All Nigerians must support the government to totally eliminate Boko Haram in Nigeria by becoming more vigilant and reporting any suspicious movement to the security agencies,’’ he said.
