Three members of the Joint Task force were killed in Nembe, southern area of Bayelsa State on Monday morning. Subsequently, Joseph Okojie, the Commander of Operation of Delta State has deployed a reinforcement team to apprehend the killers.
According to a statement by the military’s spokesperson, Ahmed, the attack was carried out at about 10:00am on the said day. The officers came under attack at a checkpoint mounted by the Nembe waterway checkpoint by persons suspected to be militants.
Ahmed attributed the attack to the ongoing of operations of the JTF operation, Delta State, which is aimed at flushing out all forms of criminality especially pipeline vandalism and destruction of illegal refinery within the area.
He assured the Nembe community further that the JTF team was mandated to ensure conducive and safe waterways for legitimate business in the Joint Operation Areas.
Millitant activities in the area have pushed crude production in Nigeria to 30-year lows in recent weeks, reducing the nation’s revenue. Several oil installations have been attacked as well, a situation the Nigerian government said had made worse Nigeria’s poor power supply situation.
