The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, is considering a repeal of Nigeria’s anti-gay law if elected as president.
The PDP claimed that Buhari held talks in the United Kingdom with Representatives of four western governments, who proposed to provide him funds if he was ready to support legislation to allow same sex marriage in Nigeria. They added that Buhari appealed to western governments for support and endorsement.
It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan, had in January, 2014 signed the anti-gay laws, despite pressure from western governments to respect gay and lesbian rights. The law which spells out penalties of up to 14 years in prison and bans gay marriage, same-sex “amorous relationships” and membership of gay rights groups was passed by the National Assembly in May 2013 but Jonathan had delayed signing it into law.
