Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra, Ken Emeakayi, has urged the state independent electoral commission to conduct elections in councils declared inconclusive.

Emeakayi made the call in Awka on Wednesday at a news briefing.

He said that the appeal became necessary because of the insensitivity of the commission to calls by the party to conclude the elections in the affected areas as directed by the courts. He listed the councils as Ihiala and Nnewi North.

Emeakayai said that in democratic setting, leaders were bound to obey the law of the land and the decisions of the courts.

He expressed disappointment that the state government was dragging foot on the conduct of the election following the order by the court in June.

He said that the duty and functions of elected council chairmen and councillors had been usurped by the state government, describing it as a misfit in a democracy.

Emeakayai said that the government should respect the Freedom of Information Act by making public the statement of account of income and expenditure of the 21 councils since inception.
