Third Mainland Bridge, Abuja-Keffi Highway rank as roads with highest daily traffic

Third Mainland Bridge and Abuja-Keffi Highway have ranked as Nigerian roads with the highest average daily traffic, according to the 2020 National Highway traffic report by Tolami Playman.

The report rated the average daily traffic of all Nigerian roads and named the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos-Abeokta Highway and Niger-Bridge among the top six Nigerian roads with the highest average daily traffic.

Third Mainland Bridge topped the chart with an average daily traffic of 133,000; followed by Abuja-Keffi Highway with an average daily traffic of 93,000; Lagos-Ibadan Expressway ranked third with 46,000 average daily traffic; Apapa-Oshodi Expressway ranked fourth with 46,000 average daily traffic; Lagos-Abeokta Expressway ranked fifth with 31,000 average daily traffic while Niger-Bridge ranked sixth with 30,000 average daily traffic.

According to the report, both Third Mainland Bridge and Abuja-Keffi Highway are 90 percent dominated by light vehicles.

This shows that most traffic on both highways is from private cars and urban commuters.

This explains the need for the Lagos State Government to be more aggressive in improving its public mass transit options to relieve the rate of vehicular congestion on the road, the report suggested.

“A well-run metro and Bus rapid transit (BRT) are unavoidable. Ferries are negligible and should not be a priority,” the report states.

For truck traffic, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has the highest average daily traffic with about 12,000 counts; followed by Abuja-Keffi Highway with an average daily traffic of 8, 700; Abuja-Kaduna ranked third with 8,000 average daily traffic; Apapa-Oshodi Expressway ranked fourth with about 6,900 average daily traffic while Third Mainland Bridge ranked fifth with about 4,500 average daily traffic.

The report states that Enugu-Port Harcourt Highway has about 36 percent truck share; Abuja-Kaduna Highway has 36 percent truck share; Ibadan-Ilorin Highway has 34 percent; Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has 30 percent while Ilorin-Jebba Highway has 27 percent truck share.
