As the rainy season approaches, car owners in Nigeria need to be cautious of the potential damage flooding can have on their cars.

Though the impact of floods on cars may be obvious, there are several hidden ways that flooding can cause long-term damage to a vehicle.

Research has it that flooding accounts for more loss of life and property than any other type of hazard or severe weather conditions, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association.

In Nigeria, for instance, all 36 states are prone to flooding, especially Lagos, given the bad state of the road largely due to blocked as well as lack of drainage systems in the cities.

Findings show that densely populated areas are at a high risk of flash floods because buildings, driveways, roadways and parking lots can cause water runoff.

Also, drainage links and sewers clogged can lead to flooding on the nearby roads.

Here are four ways flooding can damage cars:

Electrical damage
Studies have shown that when floodwater seeps into a car’s electrical system, it can cause damage to vital components such as the alternator, starter, and battery. The moisture can cause short circuits, which can lead to costly repairs or replacements.

Brake failure
Floodwater can also damage a car’s brake system, which can lead to brake failure. The moisture can cause rust and corrosion to form on the brake rotors, callipers, and pads leading to the reduction of their effectiveness and reliability.

Engine damage
It has been discovered that when floodwater enters a car’s engine through the air intake or other openings, it can cause serious damage to critical components such as the pistons, bearings, and cylinders. This can result in reduced engine performance or even complete engine failure.

Mold and mildew
Floodwaters can create an ideal environment for mold and mildew to grow inside a car. This can cause a foul smell and can be a health hazard for occupants. In addition, mold and mildew can damage upholstery, carpets, and other interior components of the car.
