FG postpones Kara Bridge repair works

The Lagos State Government has postponed the planned replacement of expansion joints on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, delaying road works that were expected to cause two weeks of traffic disruptions.

In a notice issued on Tuesday morning, Adeleye Richard, acting Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, said the postponement was directed by higher authorities due to what he described as very crucial reasons.

The update came after motorists were advised to expect traffic disruptions and plan alternative routes ahead of the scheduled maintenance.

The latest postponement comes months after the Federal Ministry of Works announced a six-week partial closure of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in February to carry out emergency repairs on expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo-Punch Bridge.

At the time, the ministry said the maintenance work was intended to resume critical rehabilitation on the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge, which had earlier been suspended following widespread complaints from motorists over severe traffic congestion caused by the initial repair exercise.

The ministry also said the expansion joints on the three bridges had deteriorated significantly, warning that their condition posed safety risks to motorists and increased the likelihood of road crashes if left unattended.

The postponement leaves unresolved concerns over the condition of the affected expansion joints, which authorities had previously identified as requiring urgent intervention to ensure the continued safety and structural integrity of the bridges.

While the government has not immediately disclosed the reason for the latest postponement, it is expected to announce a new date for the maintenance works. Until then, motorists will continue to use the affected section of the expressway without the previously planned traffic diversions.
