Suzuki ‘thinking bigger’ with new SX4

businessday-icon

For decades in its history as a car maker, Suzuki has never really had a strong contender in the C-segment sedan class. Even its current offering (not sold in the local market) is a four-door version of the SX4, essentially compromised by having shared its design brief with a crossover vehicle.

Now there is a brand new sedan coming and while it will probably share its platform with the new SX4, it is at least taking its own design path. In fact, the accompanying teaser shots of the concept version show that it will have a rather elegant design. While these official images do not show much of the front end, it can be seen that, it has an athletic profile and shapely rear end. There is even a few hints of BMW.

The sedan will be unveiled in concept form, dubbed ‘Authentics’, at the Shanghai motor show later this month, but no word yet on what will power it or what kind of technology that can will come with it. However, the production model is likely to share many of its components with the new Suzuki SX4, which means a choice between petrol and diesel 1.6-litre engines, a practical interior and the option of a double-panel glass sliding roof.

No word on whether the Corolla rival would come to Nigeria, but given that its predecessor almost made it here, we’d imagine that it’s certainly on Suzuki radar into the local market.
