Nigeria’s youth population will be crucial to improving data privacy culture in Nigeria, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission has said.

This is as the commission in partnership with Moniepoint Microfinance Bank teamed up to promote the responsible use of personal data among young Nigerians during the National Privacy Week 2024.

Speaking on this, Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer, said, “Our youth are the future of Nigeria’s digital economy. They must understand the importance of data privacy and use personal data responsibly and ethically.”

The commission’s plan aligns with Nigeria’s aspirations for a robust digital economy. By equipping the youth with data literacy, the country hopes to cultivate a pool of responsible digital citizens and data protection professionals, crucial for adhering to the newly enacted Nigeria Data Protection Act, the commissioner noted.

Also commenting, Babatunde Olofin, Managing Director, Moniepoint MfB, stated, “Data is not just a commodity. It is a reflection of our identity.”

According to him, it is important to empower young people to “know their rights and recognise the value of personal data.” This, he believes, is key to “success in a digital and globalised environment.”

Olofin further emphasised the bank’s commitment to fostering a responsible digital ecosystem. “Financial happiness can only happen in an environment where data subjects behave well as responsible digital citizens,” he added.
